I just report the news:
Northbound I-475 will be closed for reconstruction starting Tuesday from exit 13 at Saginaw Road to the north I-75 junction.
Plan your detour:
MDOT's 2008 statewide construction map The $11.1-million project is scheduled to last until mid-September and will include ramp work, drainage improvements and median crossover work, according to MDOT.
It means drivers will be diverted onto alternate routes -- particularly to westbound I-69 to northbound I-75 -- to make it to their destinations.
That's bad news for Cary DeVoe of Mt. Morris, who travels the freeway every day for work and isn't looking forward to the detour.
He said the nearly two miles of reconstruction would affect him "big time."
"That bites," said DeVoe, 42, who is a construction worker. "I'm on the expressway all the time."
On and off ramps at the Clio Road/I-475 interchange and northbound I-475 exit ramps and southbound I-75 ramps at the I-75/I-475 junction also will be closed for construction.
Traffic on Clio and Saginaw roads to I-475 will be detoured to southbound I-475 to westbound I-69 to northbound I-475.
Clio Road is planned to have at least one lane open during the construction project.
But I-475 travelers won't see an end to the work in October. After the northbound freeway construction is completed, road crews will shut down the southbound side from the I-75/I-475 interchange to Saginaw Road for work.
"I-475 is a major corridor, and it is in need of some structural repair work," said MDOT spokeswoman Anita Richardson. "We'll advise motorists to drive carefully in their commutes. We're doing this job and others to maintain the roads for the safety of the motoring public."
