Gun season and trail riding!?!?!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOV.15TH-30TH
This is getting discussed on a couple of different threads. So to clear things up, i will post info from the dnr handbook about this topic. You can ride during bow season. You can ride during gun season too. Hours are restricted in gun season. My advice, let the hunters have their two weeks, mean while, you stay safe from stray bullets. If you must ride, check out the mounds in mt.morris. ================================================== ======== in addition to restrictions on state-owned lands and other violations previously noted, the following acts are unlawful anywhere in the state except as noted. Orv operation is prohibited: in public hunting areas during the november firearm deer season, from 7:00 a.m. To 11:00 a.m. And 2:00 p.m. To 5:00 p.m., except for these cases: going to or from a residence or hunting camp that is inaccessible by a conventional vehicle (subject to state land regulations) on private property, with landowner’s permission passenger vehicles while being operated on roads capable of sustaining automobile traffic a person holding a “permit to hunt from a standing vehicle” or other persons meeting disabled requirements while engaged in hunting or fishing activity

Keep in mind that licensed hunters ARE allowed to use their ATVs even off of a designated trailhead, to remove a legally tagged deer,at speeds of no more than 5mph, even during the hours that you mentioned above.
The trick here is, that they MUST be using their ATV for ''retreival'' purposes and not joy riding.

Did i also hear that they now need a orange flag too? Well read anyways... That would take a change in legislation, and so far, no changes to legislation yet, however, Sheltrown and his aid are proposing a new 2010 Comprehensive ORV legislation some time soon and the orange flag stuff could/might be added to it. Hope none of it goes thru!

There was some legislation that was approved late last year that allows persons holding a valid permit to hunt from a standing vehicle or a person with disabilities hunting while using an ORV, to display an orange flag to identify themselves as hunters .
The new law was intended to prevent misunderstandings between sportsman that might arise when confronted with an ORV operating in an area open to hunting.
Its important to understand that the new law simple allows hunters with disabilities to display an orange flag IF they so choose to, the law does NOT require a flag and their is no size or height requirement.
So, if or when you folks see a orange flag being displayed during hunting season on an ORV, you now know what it means.

Chops... thanks for the info about the orange flags during deer season. I fly an orange pennant on my ATV to be more visible on the roads and trails...I'm a bit of a slow poke. As I don't ride during deer season I assume it is OK to continue to use it.

Dave, there is no law on the books that state you cannot have your flag, and since you dont ride during hunting season, there is nothing to worry about.

I spoke with a Conservation Officer this morning; I asked him if riding on a designated ORV trail was legal during gun deer season. He was with his sergeant and they discussed this issue.
Their comment was that you may ride on designated ORV trails during the season. They made it clear that you must stay on the designated ORV trail and not go off trail into hunting areas.
After obtaining this information I will be going for a ride soon, likely on the trails going out of Manton (north of Cadillac).
