I love my battery Tender. The one I bought came with both type's of hook up's. I think when I bought mine it was at a bike shop so I paid a little to much, but I think it was around $55.00. They have cheaper model's and they a waterproof model, but I don't how much they cost. I know that there are model's that will charge multipal batteries at the same time.

I bought a cheap Battery Tender from Harbor Freight when it was on sale for 50% off. I paid 4.99 and it works great.
Just leave it hooked to the battery and when the battery voltage drops a little below 13.2 volts, the battery tender automatically turns itself on.
When battery voltage reaches 13.2 volts, than the Battery Tender will automatically shut itself off.
Its one of the best products under 5 bucks that I;ve spent.

I have a 06 Outty 800 and you are 100% correct, the battery is a pain in the ass to get to.
I actually charge the battery on my outty dirctly from the positive lead on my winch relay, this wire goes directly to the battery and is not hard to get to.
